Supermoon Tonight

Supermoon IBT - Toby Gant

There will be another super moon tonight. My gallery image of supermoon was just published in Australia’s International Business Times at http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/481900/20130622/supermoon-2013-australia-photos-flickr.htm#.UcWzEvm1F8F. They include suggestions on how to get a good image of the supermoon. There is a slideshow showing some super moon shots that may inspire you.

As far as my personal recommendations go, I suggest using a long focal length and of course a sturdy tripod. There is not very much room for error on exposure. You need to be precise. The contrast between the illuminated moon and shadows in the scene will be wide. If you are not certain you can hit the correct exposure, I would recommend bracketing your exposure. Time will be limited as the moon will rise quickly. And most importantly I would recommend placing something in the scene to show some perspective. A building, structure, person or statue will give some perspective to the size of the moon. Scouting your location in advance will be crucial. I suggest The Photographer’s Ephemeris. It will help you get to the exact spot  you need to be and what time you need to be there.

Supermoon Georgia

Supermoon over LanierWe took the kids to visit supermoon again this year. The last time we saw it we were in Florida. Tonight we watched it rise over Lake Lanier in Georgia. Conditions were not as good as what we experienced last year. But, I was still able to get a couple of interesting shots. I hope everyone had an opportunity to get out and see it tonight. Please share links to any shots you were able to capture here on my blog. I would love to see them. My favorite shot of supermoon from last year is on my site at http://www.tobygant.com/springpark#h25172045. Thanks for stopping by.

“SuperMoon”

I couldn’t resist going out tonight to get a glimpse of the “supermoon.” What incredible weather we are having. We went out to Spring Park in Green Cove Springs, FL. Not only was the weather incredible but, the moon rise on the St. Johns river was as well. There were many friendly people out too. What a great evening.
